This is a collection of individual drawings and full pages from some of my 2009/2010 sketchbooks. Drawing is another way to see an object, to understand what it is I am looking at. Tracing something on paper that I find visually appealing or interesting is like a mediation on that object, the space it occupies and the light that it reflects or absorbs.
Currently still in the design and development phase, the Galleries use Plone 3.0 as a CMS, and a customized version of Plone4Artists. These design templates build on some of the interface design choices made for the Burning Blog, such as adding more white space to the page and carrying over the smoke/grey toned colour scheme.
In 2008 and 2009 I designed all aspects of the covers and inside pages of the event calendar that is handed out to participants upon arrival at Black Rock City. I redesigned the layout of events on the interior pages for increased readability and added icons for categories, so participants could see at a glance which events were gatherings, parades, workshops, adult-orientated or kid-friendly.
The characters in my paintings speak to each other. They have conversations with each other, or with the viewer. What entrances me is random, amusing snippets of conversations that I have either overheard or have used in conversation. Sometimes it’s a text message, or tweet.
The art theme for the 2009 Burning Man event struck a chord with my interest in biology and natural sciences. With my design, I illustrate the evolution of consciousness and life on Earth, not just the evolution of mankind.
During 2007 FontShop showcased new type family releases in monthly calendars. I designed the calendars for June, September and November of that year. For each calendar, the purpose was to show the range of the typeface being showcased and the unique glyphs and letterforms inherent within that typeface.
This project involved the creation of a logo, a website and a print brochure. For the logo, photographs were selected from the project orchard and farm galleries to find an archetypal tree and field. Those elements were turned into stylized vectors, and soft gradients added to bring in light and color.
The Burning Blog is a collation of previous blogs from sub-sections of the main Burning Man site. I designed and implemented a custom Wordpress theme for this blog. I integrated some subtle design and layout changes to differ it from the look and feel of the main Burning Man site, allowing the main content to breathe and increasing readability.
I designed promotional materials for the show ‘And if we Shadows’. This consisted of a poster and postcard. The print materials required a visual language unique enough to describe the show’s content at a glance, and entice possible attendees to buy tickets. The use of performance photos from previous, similar events layered with urban illustrations and a dark sunburst pattern evokes both the urban grittiness and saucy burlesque atmosphere.
