A wider content area has been integrated into the page layout under the narrower existing main navigation. The challenge with these gallery pages is to keep them as simple and usable as possible, given that there are multiple levels of site navigation that are required to be visible at one time.

The website uses woodcut illustrations of fruit trees at the top and bottom and similar soft gradients as the logo in the background, repeating the feeling of sky behind the web content.Lots of white space for photographs illustrate the activities at the farm. The overall look and feel is rustic and simple.

The brochure is 11 x 17 folded in half, and in black and white. It’s easy to update yearly and print for very low cost, important factors for a non-profit with limited resources.

I designed and implemented a custom Wordpress theme for this blog. I integrated some subtle design and layout changes to differ it from the look and feel of the main Burning Man site, allowing the main content to breathe and increasing readability.

I implemented a few subtle design changes to separate the blog from the look and feel of the main site. I changed the body font for increased readability. I added more white space to define main content areas and let the content breathe, and created a unique color scheme of smoke and gray tones not used by other sections of the site. Retaining the iconic flame motifs from the rest of the site, I used small flames in the side bar and button graphics.

The blog successfully repeats the major design elements of the new site while feeling like a distinct entity. Repeating the visual language is key to consistency and authenticity of voice.

Each newsletter featured either new releases, previous type face releases now available in OpenType, FontShop website updates and other related information. I was responsible for designing the type specimens and headers for each newsletter, then coding HTML and email versions for the 90,000+ member mailing list.

The challenge was to concisely convey the versatility and appeal of the typefaces in a three or four-line specimen. Display fonts were allowed one or two lines.

Comparisons between weights.

Each specimen showed a multitude of weights and special characters. Adding a line of Spanish, French or Russian in the specimen in addition to English illustrated the diacritics for fonts with multiple language support.

Multiple languages demonstrated.

I designed the newsletters from May 2007 to December 2007. They are currently viewable in the FontShop Newsletter Archives.

I designed three animal characters for this game, an owl, duck and rabbit. The game had a working title of sorsastus, which means hunting in Finnish. The pattern behind the title is a reference to norwegian knitting patterns done with intarsia. Each character had an end size of 20 by 20 pixels. The game demonstrated a N-gage gaming API running on an S60/Symbian OS.

Mustn’t Grumble was a line of knitted accessories that used intarsia (a technique using multiple strands of colored yarn) to render enlarged, pixelated typefaces. I used typefaces specifically designed for flash animation.

I designed and developed an online shop in Flash to exhibit the pieces and sold wrist warmers, arm warmers, scarfs and hats. I exhibited some of these designs at the 2004 Bad Type conference at St. Bride’s Printing Library in London.

The typeface in this logo is based on letterforms from Unibody, one of the pixel fonts I was using in my knitting patterns. I knitted the words, then scanned and digitally traced the resulting fabric, warping it to show that it was flexible and reminiscent of the actual textile. The angry knitter is a pixelized illustration, referring to the often monotonous, frustrating labor of the craft.
