This year’s What Where When is based on the art theme of Metropolis. The What Where When is a 96 page booklet with approximately 960 event listings scheduled for the week of Burning Man. The outside cover design portrays both the idealism of living in a thriving, wealthy city partnered with the reality that many urban dwellers live in favelas or shanty-towns. The inside cover uses a photo of stack of rebar as a background, a reference to the many pieces of rebar used in staking and anchoring Black Rock City structures to the desert floor.
Now launched at the beta stage at galleries.burningman.com, this redesign of the old images.burningman.com site incorporates playa artifacts and video along with photographs. These design templates build on some of the interface design choices made for the Burning Blog, such as adding more white space to the page and carrying over the smoke/grey toned colour scheme.
In 2008 and 2009 I designed the covers and inside pages of the What Where When, the event calendar that is handed out to participants at Black Rock City. I redesigned the layout of events on the interior pages for increased readability and added icons for categories. With the new icons, participants could see at a glance which events were gatherings, parades, workshops, adult-orientated or kid-friendly.
The art theme for the 2009 Burning Man event struck a chord with my interest in biology and natural sciences. With my design, I illustrate the evolution of consciousness and life on Earth, not just the evolution of mankind.
The Burning Blog is a collation of previous blogs from sub-sections of the main Burning Man site. I designed and implemented a custom WordPress theme for this blog. I integrated some subtle design and layout changes to differ it from the look and feel of the main Burning Man site, allowing the main content to breathe and increasing readability.
